Miami-Dade judge holds member of powerful family in contempt

MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Abdulla bin Ahmad Al-Ghurair is the scion of a prominent Dubai family. Forbes estimates their net worth at $7.1 billion, yet one of his sons just can't seem to get it together. 

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge John Thornton entered a civil contempt order against Azzan bin Abdulla Al-Ghurair May 11 over unpaid legal fees and failure to appear in court in February, March and May.

According to the court order Al-Ghurair owes more than $1.9 million in legal fees to Coral Gables attorney Weil Quaranta and to Sao Paulo-based Moraes Pitombo Advogados in a settlement to repay a $7.5 million loan. Thornton also fined Al-Ghurair $100,000 for court costs and expects him to appear in court next month.
