HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Firefighters responded to reports of a fire inside the Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station in Homestead on Saturday, according to the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.
Florida Power & Light reported there was an electrical fire at one of Turkey Point's non-nuclear plants at 9700 SW 344 St., east of Homestead, next to Biscayne National Park.
The incident didn't affect customer service or pose an immediate danger to the facility, according to FPL spokesman Peter Robbins, of NextEra Energy.
"The power was shutoff to the area, unit 3, and as with most electrical fires, it cleared itself out," Robbins said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was assisting FPL with an investigation into the cause of the electrical fault, Robbins said. Turkey Point, which operates five power-generating units, is the largest generating station in Florida.
