DAVIE, Fla. – A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was injured Friday in a crash on Interstate 595.
The crash occurred Friday afternoon in the eastbound lanes near the exit ramp to Florida's Turnpike in Davie.
According to the FHP, the motorcycle trooper was taken to a hospital with a serious leg injury, but he was expected to survive.
Investigators said the driver of a blue Lexus was heading east on I-595 when he realized he was in the lanes to merge onto the turnpike. Instead of turning around, the driver decided to cut across traffic.
The trooper, who was driving a motorcycle, and another Lexus were traveling in the inside lane. The trooper was traveling behind the Lexus.
The driver of the Lexus had to brake suddenly to avoid the blue Lexus that attempted to change lanes to the left. Troopers said the trooper changed lanes to go around the Lexus and struck the right-rear of the blue Lexus, which caused the motorcycle to overturn on its side.
Debris from the blue Lexus struck the other Lexus involved.
"You can't do that," Lt. Gene Hingson told Local 10 News. "I mean, if you've made the mistake, just stick with it and then get back to where you're supposed to be."
Eastbound traffic was slow moving as a result of the crash investigation.
