Man shot, killed in middle of street in Brownsville neighborhood

18-year-old man pronounced dead at scene

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Two Miami-Dade County schools were placed on lockdown Friday after a fatal shooting nearby.

Brownsville Middle and Earlington Heights Elementary schools were affected after an 18-year-old man was shot and killed in the middle of the street.

Police said they found a black man suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sky 10 was above the fatal shooting scene, near Northwest 26th Avenue and Northwest 52nd Street. A body could be seen covered by a yellow tarp in the middle of the street.

Dozens of bullet or shell casing markers surrounded the body.

People in the area said shootings are something that happen far too often in the community.

"Something has to be done about this whole thing. Something has to be done," Pastor Eric Readon said.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokeswoman Daisy Gonzalez said the victim was an adult education student.

"More than one is too much, and the outcome doesn't change whether it was 40 rounds or whether it was one round," Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said. "We still have a deceased 18-year-old male lying behind us."

Detectives said they believe that the shooter took off in a dark-colored vehicle and said dozens of people witnessed the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
