MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – An explosion was reported Tuesday afternoon at a Florida Power & Light substation in west Miami-Dade County.
Sky 10 was flying above the substation near Northwest 64th Street and Northwest 72nd Avenue as flames and thick smoke could be seen coming from a transformer grid.
About 10,000 FPL customers were initially without power, FPL spokesman Chris McGrath said, but service was restored to all customers by Tuesday night.
McGrath said no injuries were reported.
People in the area reported hearing an explosion moments before seeing the smoke and flames, but McGrath said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
"It sounded like a bomb going off," witness Percy Watkins said.
Firefighters were using a ladder truck to douse the flames.
Traffic in the area was being detoured while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.
