Bank robbery leads to fatal police-involved shooting

FBI: Suspect shot by police while fleeing Wells Fargo

NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – An armed bank robbery at a Wells Fargo in Northwest Miami-Dade led to a fatal police-involved shooting Monday morning.

Authorities said the robbery happened about 10:40 a.m. at 800 North Miami Beach Boulevard.

Sky 10 was over the scene at Northwest 151st Street and 6th Avenue in Golden Glades at about 11:15 a.m. as numerous police cruisers were seen surrounding a blue Nissan SUV that's windows were covered in a yellow tarp.

According to a customer who was inside the bank, a security guard escorted the robber, who was armed with a handgun, to the teller and instructed the employee to hand the man money.

The witness told Local 10 News that the cash was placed inside plastic shopping bags, and then the security guard escorted the man out.  The woman said as soon as the robber left, the guard yelled for someone to call police.

She described the robber as a short man, who is possibly in his 60s or 70s.

FBI special agent George Piro said the culprit did not allow the customers to leave during the robbery. He said members of the North Miami Police Department's Street Crimes Task Force caught up with the man at the intersection just east of Interstate 95.

Authorities exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was shot and killed. A woman who was driving the alleged getaway car was arrested. Piro said cash was found inside the SUV, but did not disclose the amount.

The police-involved shooting happened just outside the fences of Biscayne Gardens Elementary School prompting a lockdown of the school. Thomas Jefferson Middle School was also placed on lockdown as a precaution.

The FBI has not released the identity of the robbery suspect or the woman arrested.
