MIAMI – One person was killed when a driver lost control of a car and crashed into a wall near Brickell early Friday morning.
According to Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll, the driver of a Lexus was speeding when the car approached the intersection of Southwest Third Avenue and Southwest 13th Street. It appears that the driver's car went airborne and hit five other vehicles before the Lexus burst into flames after slamming into a wall at 90 miles per hour.
"The first car caught on fire and we heard the explosion, like a boom, and then the other caught on fire and it kept on expanding," Andres Zacarias, who heard the crash, told Local 10 News. "The whole part of the building woke us up. We were all in panic (when) we saw the fire right there."
The driver, who was trapped inside the burning vehicle, died at the scene.
"We thought it was a bomb," Zacarias said. "I'm serious because I never heard, like, a crash. I just heard the explosion go off."
Authorities said the Lexus landed on top of a parked car and several other vehicles also caught fire.
Residents in the area told Local 10 News reporter Erica Rakow that the intersection is the scene of many crashes.
The car is expected to be taken to the medical examiner's office with the body still inside.
No other information about the driver has been released. No one else was injured.
