'Dreamers' protest against deportation of detained illegal immigrants

Group chains themselves to each other, gate at Broward Transitional Center

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – With locked arms, a group of young protestors who call themselves dreamers, protested the deportation of illegal immigrants detained in South Florida.

Sky 10 was over the scene in Deerfield Beach as deputies responded to the protest.

The group of seven people chanted and sat tied to one another, and tied to the gate at the Broward Transitional Center off Powerline Road just north of Sample Road.

The group chained themselves using PVC pipe to make it harder for them to be cut free.

Dozens of others stood on the sidewalk -- all holding signs and all trying to get the attention of President Barack Obama. The group said they are seeking relief for immigrants, and want the president to take action sooner rather than later. They said they are especially fighting for the low priority inmates being kept at the detention facility.

Regardless of their cause, deputies said laws were broken.

All seven who chained themselves together were arrested and charged with trespassing after a warning. Deputies said they gave the group water to keep them hydrated throughout the day, and said the individuals had the ability to free themselves from the chain at any time, but refused.

The group held a similar protest Tuesday at Sen. Marco Rubio's office in Doral, and Thursday they are expected to protest in Homestead.
