MIAMI – Dozens of residents were displaced Wednesday morning after a fire broke out at an apartment building in Miami.
The fire was reported about 8 a.m. at 1150 NW 29th St.
Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll Jr. said 45 residents were displaced.
"Smoke was a lot," resident Ivan Aguila said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but authorities believe it stemmed from an air conditioning unit in one of two apartments that were destroyed in the fire.
"At least (we) are still alive," Gloria Melendez, who lives in one of the destroyed apartments, said.
The other 14 units have smoke and water damage. The 45 people who live at the apartment building and their pets are being helped by the Red Cross.
It's unclear when they will be able to go home.
"I need to go to work and now, I don't know," Angel Hernandez said.
Fire investigators allowed residents to go inside one by one to get their necessities.
Firefighters said damaged electrical wires and water pipes will prevent the residents from going home for some time.
