MIAMI – A dog attacked a postal worker Tuesday afternoon in Miami, U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Debra Fetterly said.
The dog, a gray and white American pit bull named Pancake, attacked the woman in the 2100 block of Southwest 24th Terrace.
The attack happened at about 4:30 p.m., when the mail carrier approached the front door of the home, Miami-Dade County Animal Services spokeswoman Lilian Bohorquez said. That's when Pancake ran through the open gate and bit the postal worker.
Pancake and the victim ended up on the sidewalk in front of the property, Bohorquez said, and several people came to her aid.
One of those people hit the dog on the head with a 2-by-4 several times in order for the dog to release its bite, Bohorquez said.
The postal employee was bitten on the right forearm and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, Bohorquez said.
The owner of the dog was asked to voluntarily surrender the dog, but refused. Pancake is now in quarantine at the owner's residence.
The woman has been a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service since 2001. Her identity has not been released.
The dog's owner is expected to be questioned by Miami police.
