MIRAMAR, Fla. – Interim Miramar Police Chief Dexter Williams was appointed the new chief of the police department on Thursday after working in law enforcement for 25 years.
Williams, who has been employed by the Miramar Police Department since 1993, is a native of New York and is of Jamaican descent.

He started his law enforcement career working as a detention officer for the State of Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.
According to Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues, Williams has a passion for working with children entering the judicial system and has worked with at-risk youth through outreach programs in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
Williams also works with various nonprofit organizations that deal with at-risk children.
Williams previously served as assistant chief of police beginning in 2013.
He holds a bachelor's degree in public administration and a master's degree in management and justice administration. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and is affiliated with numerous professional and civic organizations.
