DAVIE, Fla. – A Davie police sergeant who was struck by a vehicle Aug. 3 on Interstate 75 while trying to help someone who had crashed their car was released from the hospital Tuesday.
Patricia Ravine, 35, was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center after the crash on I-75 just south of Royal Palm Boulevard.
Authorities said Ravine saw an SUV roll over and immediately stopped to help. But police said another driver failed to move over a lane and struck Ravine.
Ravine suffered head trauma and several other injuries, and had to undergo rehabilitation at the Memorial Regional South Rehab Institute in Hollywood.
The man Ravine stopped to help, Alexander Vanhaute, was arrested on DUI charges, and the man who struck her was ticketed for careless driving.
Numerous officers gathered outside the hospital to greet Ravine before she headed home.
"She's a very hard worker. She cares about her job. She cares about the people that she serves," Detective Johnnie Bennett said.
Ravine has been with the Davie Police Department for 10 years.
A GoFundMe page was established by the Fraternal Order of Police to help pay for Ravine's medical costs.
