Cuban government TV launches new 'Canal Caribe'

Cuban media makes history with first HD-1 news channel

HAVANA ā€“ Canal Caribe will be offering several hours of news programming every day in Cuba.

The Cuban government unveiled the island's first news channel on March 14. Their newsroom counts on the experience of some former employees ofĀ TeleSUR.Ā They will be transmitting throughĀ HD-1 -- a first for the island.Ā 

OvidioĀ Cabrera Garcia, the TelevisiĆ³n Cubana's news director, said Canal Caribe will air news 18 hours a day, seven days a week. They will be working on improving immediacy and reach with a network of correspondents spread out in Latin America.

News anchor LuisĀ Miguel Cabrera said the newscast will also attempt to mirror the Cuban reality. Their list of shows includes Ā "The World Now" with Cabrera and Cristina Escobar andĀ "Economic World" withĀ MaricelaĀ RecasenĀ andĀ AglayaĀ Diaz.
