U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer to step down in March

Top federal prosecutor announces resignation

MIAMI –  A week after Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions was confirmed as the next U.S. Attorney General, the Southern District of Florida's U.S. Attorney announced that his last day on the job will be March 3.

Wifredo A. Ferrer, a 2010 President Barack Obama nominee, released a statement on Wednesday announcing his resignation. Ben Greenberg, his first assistant, will supervise some 250 lawyers temporarily, while President Donald Trump nominates his successor.

"For almost seven years, I have been blessed to work alongside the remarkable men and women in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, community leaders, and our federal, state and local law enforcement partners who strive tirelessly to combat crime and promote a safer, stronger and more united district," Ferrer said.

In all, the Miami-based U.S. attorney's office indicted 11,000 cases and charged more than 18,000 defendants during Ferrer's time. The office handles federal cases in southeastern Florida from Vero Beach to Key West.

After Trump was elected in November, Ferrer's 93 counterparts have been preparing for the Department of Justice.

"I am incredibly proud of all that we have been able to accomplish together, in and out of the courtroom, including building meaningful bonds of trust with the diverse community we serve," Ferrer said in his statement.
