MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Members of the Perrine community gathered for a public meeting on Tuesday regarding Jamar Rollins, who was shot and killed Friday in a police-involved shooting.
Miami-Dade police said officers pulled over a car in the 10100 block of West Indigo Street when the passenger took off running -- he's been identified as Devin Smith and is wanted for questioning.
They said the driver, Rollins, 21, then pulled out a handgun, forcing officers to shoot.
Police they were in the Perrine neighborhood to prevent a reported retaliatory shooting.
Several residents claim they saw Rollins with his hands up at the time of the shooting.
Police said those claims are just rumors.
"The reason we're saying they are rumors is because not one person has come forward yet to Florida Department of Law Enforcement to say they witnessed that," Director Juan Perez said.
Rollins' aunt responded to that comment.
"That's not a rumor though because if Channel 10 was able to find witnesses and put them on the news last night, then why can't the police department?" Karen Harris said.
