More than 2,000 pounds of cocaine found on ship docked in Miami

Freighter had traveled to South Florida from Haiti, authorities say

MIAMI – More than 2,000 pounds of cocaine was seized this week in a two-day operation conducted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Coast Guard officials said the drugs were found on a Bolivian freighter that had traveled to South Florida from Haiti.

The ship, which was carrying empty containers, docked at 3300 N. North River Drive, where authorities discovered a white powdery substance as they were drilling.

They later discovered that the powder was 800 bricks of cocaine.

"(The bricks) were concealed in the deck compartments of this freighter that came out of Haiti," Port Director Dylan DeFrancisci said. "These freighters typically come in empty into the United States and they are usually loaded with household goods going back to Haiti."

The operation is expected to continue Thursday.
