The man, later identified as Michael Brandt, 22, was spotted a short time later near the Ocean Reef Club gate, but he refused to stop when ordered to do so, dropped his bike and jumped into the water, swimming away, deputies said.

While investigating a burglary at a home on Exuma Road, deputies learned there was a day laborer who disappeared from his job site at the resort. Deputies said Brandt fit the description of the missing worker.

A deputy soon saw Brandt near where he had jumped into the water and told the man that he wanted to speak to him. Brandt ran and jumped back into the water, swimming away again, deputies said.

As deputies were searching for Brandt, a state wildlife officer found him standing in the roadway and took him into custody.

Deputies said Brandt admitted to entering a house and taking a nap in the cool AC. Deputies said Brandt also admitted to taking money that was in the house.

Brandt faces multiple charges of burglary, grand theft, criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
