MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Police in Miami Gardens are investigating after two people were killed Sunday night in a shooting.
Miami Gardens police spokeswoman Petula Burks said the victims were inside a car parked in a swale near Northwest 208th Street and Northwest 38th Avenue shortly before 8:30 p.m. when someone approached the car and opened fire.
Burks said the driver of the car sped away but lost control, slamming into a mailbox and two parked cars.
Both victims, Oliver Portieles, 28, and Janet Francis, 16, were pronounced dead at the scene.
"I was in my bedroom when I heard the 'boom, boom, boom,'" neighbor Glen Boulin said. "I heard the shots, and then a large boom at the end."
A nearby officer also heard the gunshots, and the police car was struck by stray bullets. The officer wasn't injured.
"You can't go around and be killing people like that," Angella Lewis, who lives in the area, said. "That's lack of respect for themselves, the community, their family and the person that they killed."
Burks said there is no motive for the shooting. She said witnesses only saw one person, but believed multiple shooters were involved.
No arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is being asked to call Miami Gardens police or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
