KEY LARGO, Fla. – A Miami man tried to steal bundles of recyclable cardboard Tuesday night behind a Walgreens Pharmacy in Key Largo, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Herrin said Deputy Ignacio Molina was on patrol just before 8 p.m. when he checked the area behind the store at the 99.5 mile marker of the Overseas Highway.

Molina spotted a cargo trailer hooked up to a van that was parked in the middle of the road with no lights and no license tag, Herrin said.

Authorities said the trailer was piled with unsecured pieces of metal that detectives believe were picked up from nearby neighborhoods.

Molina then saw Leonel Ortiz-Geprge picking up a bundle of cardboard from behind the store and getting ready to put it on the trailer, Herrin said.

The deputy asked Ortiz-Geprge whether he had permission to take the cardboard and the man told the deputy that he didn't know that he needed Walgreens permission to take the cardboard, Herrin said.

Herrin said Ortiz-Geprge was not able to show the deputy any proof of registration for the trailer, so it was towed from the scene.

Ortiz-Geprge was cited for towing an unregistered vehicle upon a public roadway, having unsafe, unsecured cargo in the trailer and for having no rear lights on the trailer.
