HOMESTEAD, Fla. – A prison inmate who escaped from a work-release program in Homestead has been captured and taken into custody, police said.
Marv Hubbard was found sitting at a gas station on the corner of U.S. Highway 1 and Southwest 200th Street, about 10 miles from where he escaped, Homestead police Detective Fernando Morales said.
"I saw the gentleman sitting on the floor, like six officers around him, a bunch of undercover cars, and he was just laying there on the ground," witness Craig Black said.
Black said Hubbard didn't put up a fight.
Hubbard, 40, was serving a 20-year sentence for burglary at the Dade Correctional Institution.
Morales said Hubbard escaped about 1 p.m. on Wednesday while on a work detail.
Florida Department of Corrections spokeswoman Ashley Cook said Hubbard was first assigned to a work-release program in August. Cook said the detail is given to inmates who have minimal time left on their sentence and have a history of good behavior while in prison.
Surveillance photographs showed Hubbard jumping a fence to make his escape.
Police used a helicopter and dogs to search for Hubbard, who was found the next morning about 10 miles away.
"They've been working all night, tirelessly, following up and using investigative techniques," Morales said.
The Florida City Police Department, Homestead Police Department, Florida Department of Corrections and Miami-Dade Police Department were all involved in the search.
Hubbard was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He faces additional charges related to the escape.
