FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting outside a McDonald's in Fort Lauderdale.
The shooting occurred Monday in the 2300 block of West Sunrise Boulevard.
Fort Lauderdale police Detective Kevin Dupree said an officer spotted a car that was reported stolen and pulled it over in the McDonald's drive-thru lane. Dupree said two passengers got out of the car and ran away, while the driver used the car to ram a pursuing officer.
"Officers did draw their firearms and fired shots into the vehicle," Dupree said.
Dupree said he doesn't know if the driver was struck by the bullets.
Robert Gordon said he was in the drive-thru line ordering when he heard the gunshots.
"So I look outside and I see the police officer on top of the car on the window, shooting through the windshield," Gordon said.
Detectives later found the stolen Ford Fusion abandoned. A bullet hole could be seen in the driver's side front windshield.
McDonald's was closed for hours during the police investigation.
"Our first priority is always the safety of our customers and employees," McDonald's franchise owner Brent Upchurch said in a statement. "As this is an active police investigation, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further except to say that we are cooperating fully with law enforcement at this time."
The police officer who was struck by the car was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with minor injuries.
Police said one suspect was taken into custody, but two others remain at large.
