WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A former child protective investigator from the Florida Department of Children and Families turned himself in Friday for falsifying records, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said.

Authorities said Matthew James Wilcox, 38, was assigned a child endangerment investigation on Monday and was supposed to check on a child who was at JFK Medical Center North Campus, however he never went to the hospital.

Detectives said Wilcox's supervisor visited the hospital and discovered that Wilcox had only spoken to hospital staff by telephone.

Wilcox's case notes stated that he visited the hospital and interviewed the child, authorities said.

Wilcox turned himself in Friday to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and was booked into the Western Detention Center.

The Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office will prosecute the case.
