MIAMI – Two people are dead after a car fire in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The car fire happened Wednesday morning just after 3:30 a.m. near Northwest Second Street in Miami.
A Road Ranger, identified as Jose Luis Reyes, dragged at least one victim out of the burning car. The man was pronounced dead while en route to a hospital.
"It's not the fist time they acted heroically, and it's not the first time that they've saved somebody's life out here," Trooper Jose Sanchez said. "My hat's off to the Road Rangers. This gentleman was very brave to do that."
Troopers said the car crashed into the median concrete barrier before ricocheting onto the other side of the highway, where it caught fire.
"You can see the impact to the concrete wall was severe," Sanchez said.
Traffic was backed up during the morning commute after the highway was shut down near the Interstate 395 exit.
It's not known where the pair were headed or whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. Troopers said that it's clear that speed was a factor.
The victims' identities have not been released.
