HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A driver is dead and a passenger is in the hospital after the car they were in crashed into a Publix.
The crash happened shortly before 3 a.m. Monday along Young Circle in Hollywood. The roadway was closed for several hours but reopened by 8 a.m.
Hollywood police said the burgundy 2006 Cadillac STS was traveling west on Hollywood Boulevard when it got to a roundabout and crashed into the store.
Police said the driver, identified as David Paul-Lamour, 24, of Miramar, appeared to have lost control of the car and struck a median before the Cadillac went airborne and crashed into the store's storage room.
Paul-Lamour, whom police said was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car and died at the scene.
The passenger, identified as Roxana Villa, 20, was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.
Police said Villa was wearing a seatbelt and had to be extricated from the car. Her sister told Local 10 News reporter Andrew Perez that Villa is sedated, but doing OK.
"Her shoulder and I think her two arms. But she's doing good," Cathy Duarte said.
Residents who live in the area said the roundabout has been the scene of numerous crashes, despite orange poles and warning arrows that were recently installed.
"Are you kidding me?" Stephen Scott, who heard the crash, said. "There's people speeding around here all the time. It's incredible."
