DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office detectives have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting outside a Winn-Dixie in Dania Beach.
The shooting happened Monday about 7 p.m. near the front of the store, located at 308 E. Dania Beach Blvd.
BSO spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said Jeffrey Collie, 71, drove his red pickup truck near the entrance, got out of the truck and confronted a man and his friend. An argument ensued, and Collie then shot the man, Concepcion said.
Collie was denied bond in court Tuesday. Assistant state attorney Mike Jones said Collie got upset after he believed his truck was hit by the victim's car.
Jones said Collie followed the victim to the Winn-Dixie parking lot, got into an argument with him and then shot the victim.
The victim was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where he was pronounced dead.
Concepcion said Collie was interviewed, along with other witnesses, to determine a motive. He was later arrested on a charge of second-degree murder.
Collie told detectives that he shot the victim because he tried to get away, but Jones said surveillance video from the supermarket seems to contradict that claim.
Collie's nephew, Ed Darling, said Collie fired the shot after someone tried to rob him. He told Local 10 News that his uncle is a veteran who carries a gun. He said he's sure it was in self-defense.
"He had to have been provoked," Darling said.
