BSO captain accused of fleeing scene of traffic stop

Will Jackson suspended for 'conduct unbecoming an employee'

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – More details have been released regarding a Broward Sheriff's Office captain who was suspended for "conduct unbecoming an employee."

According to a Coconut Creek police report, Will Jackson and his girlfriend, Lauderhill police Sgt. Atina Johnson, were following each other in separate vehicles last Saturday at about 2:40 a.m., when at least one of them ran a red light on Wiles Road and Northwest 39th Avenue.

Police pulled both vehicles over a short distance away on Stagecoach Drive.

According to the report, Jackson got out of his vehicle and approached the officer. The officer claimed the couple became defiant and verbally aggressive before Jackson, who serves as the chief of North Lauderdale, fled the scene.

Police said Jackson drove a short distance to his home and went inside. What happened next has not been released to the public by the Coconut Creek Police Department.

Johnson, who police said didn't flee, remains on active duty at the Lauderhill Police Department and was given a citation for running the red light.

The police case against Jackson has been sent to the state attorney's office, where prosecutors will decide whether to charge him criminally.

Jackson, who was promoted to chief by Sheriff Scott Israel in 2013, is currently suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
