Boy, 10, steals car to avoid going to school, police say

Police say boy faces charges of grand theft, aggravated battery

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A 10-year-old boy faces charges of grand theft and aggravated battery after he stole his family's car, police said.

Miami Gardens police said the boy did not want to go to school, throwing rocks and a brick at his mother and grandmother in retaliation.

Moments later, police said, the kid grabbed the car keys and drove away.

Neighbors called 911 and police apprehended him near Northwest 22nd Avenue and Northwest 167th Street.

"He could barely see over the windshield," Detective Michael Wright said.

When Local 10's Christina Vazquez went to the family's home, a woman hit her in the face.

"Why did you hit me?" Vazquez asked her. "You don't have to assault me. You can just say 'no comment.' It's a lot easier than punching me in the face."
