NORTH BAY VILLAGE, Fla. – A boat caught fire Wednesday afternoon off the 79th Street Causeway in North Bay Village, just north of Pelican Harbor Marina, authorities said.
Local 10 News photojournalist Ismael Louis took a photo of the scene shortly before 2 p.m. as the boat was nearly fully engulfed in flames.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Felipe Lay said an off-duty Miami-Dade firefighter called in the fire on the 30-foot catamaran.
Some parents who were picking up their children from sailing camp said they saw the smoke.
"I was driving and I saw big smoke coming out, and I was a little bit nervous because the kids were in sailing camp. So when I arrived here, I called one of the counselors. Luckily, they were Ok," Paula Flores said.
Lay said no one was aboard the boat and no one was injured.
The fire has since been extinguished with help from Miami-Dade and city of Miami fireboats.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
