Gay slurs spray-painted on walls at Southwest Ranches school

Surveillance video captures 2 masked vandals on property Sunday night

SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. – Police are investigating after gay slurs were spray-painted on several walls at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches.

Archdiocese of Miami spokeswoman Mary Ross Agosta said an administrator at the school discovered the graffiti Monday morning as employees were arriving at work.

A school official told Local 10 News reporter Michael Seiden that surveillance video captured two masked vandals spray-painting inside the school.

He said the vandals hopped a fence at a neighboring church to get inside about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, and were on the property for about 35 minutes.

Students told Seiden that the incident was revenge for a recent basketball game, in which the high school beat Miami Garden's Monsignor Edward Pace High School.

School officials did not immediately comment on the allegations made by the students, but said they are cooperating with authorities.

"Archbishop McCarthy's administration team is fully cooperating with the police investigation by providing documentation of the damage via photos, video and security videos," Ross Agosta said in a statement. "The graffiti has been removed and classes began on their regular schedules."

The Davie Police Department is investigating the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
