Fatal crash shuts down I-95 between Hallandale Beach Blvd., Ives Dairy Road

Four killed in head-on crash

NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A fatal crash shut down all Southbound lanes between Hallandale Beach Blvd. and Ives Dairy Road Wednesday morning. The roadway remained closed during rush hour, but reopened just before 9 a.m.

Four people were killed and one other person was injured in the crash.

Opa-locka police say they began pursuing a black Chevy Suburban after an officer observed "some sort of activity." The suspect the traveled through Miami Gardens onto northbound I-95.

He then exited at Ives Dairy Road where a gun was thrown out of the vehicle, police said. The weapon was recovered on the northbound exit of Ives Dairy Road.

The driver of the SUV then got back onto I-95 at Ives Dairy Road, driving northbound in the southbound lanes. Police stopped their pursuit at that time. Moments later, the driver of the SUV crashed head-on with a minivan, killing all four people inside.

The driver of the SUV was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood with two broken legs. Charges against him are pending.

His name has not yet being released, but police say he is a "young, black male in his early 20s." He is reportedly cooperating with investigators.

The identity of those killed in the crash has not yet been released. The van with the victims inside was removed from the scene Wednesday morning.
