Brickell CityCentre: A city within a city

Brickell CityCentre to partner with Bal Harbour Shops

MIAMI – Construction continues at the Brickell CityCentre, a $1.05 billion project that's truly a city within a city.

Four city blocks -- bordered by SW 8th Street to the south, South Miami Avenue to the east, SW 6th Street to the north, and SW 1st Avenue to the west -- are currently under construction, and when it's complete, there will be 5,000,000-square-feet of residential, retail, office, and hotel space.

Swire Properties is building the Brickell CityCentre. Construction began in July 2012.

"At the moment, we have about 120 on-site but we are just beginning," said Swire Properties President Stephen Owens. "When we get to the peak of the project, for the better part of two years, we will have about 1,700 on site daily."

Crews are also working on a two-story underground parking structure that will connect all the buildings on the nine-acre site, including two towers with a total of 810 condominiums.

"Two residential towers of condominiums, office building here, our wellness center, which is very much focused on high-end medical tourism," said Owens. "The hotel with service apartments and all of this sits atop a three-level shopping center of 500,000-square-feet."

The Brickell CityCentre is also partnering with Bal Harbour Shops for its retail. It's also the largest LEED certified project in the U.S. complete with a 130,000-square-foot "climate ribbon."

"It allows us to have natural light in the shopping center, natural ventilation yet it protects us from rain and sun and heat," said Owens.

When the project is finished, it's projected to create 3,400 permanent jobs in Miami.

The Brickell CityCentre is expected to be finished in 2015.
