TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A statewide sweep on gas stations by inspectors resulted in 81 credit card skimmers found throughout the state of Florida.
Officials with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said more than 6,000 gas stations were checked in the sweep.

"From Okaloosa County to Miami-Dade County, these skimmers are being placed on gas pumps throughout the state," Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam said. "Our inspectors will continue to work to safeguard Floridians and tourists who shouldn't have to worry about having their credit or debit card information stolen as they fuel-up."
Officials said 14 skimmers were found in Miami-Dade County and nine were found in Broward County.
South Florida had the most skimmers found in the state as one to three skimmers were found in most counties.
No skimmers were found in Monroe County.
To protect yourself, officials advise paying cash inside the store, check to make sure the gas pump dispenser is closed and use a pump closest to the store as thieves generally target pumps farther away.
