DORAL, Fla. – Five Venezuelan college students partaking in ongoing protests traveled to Washington to share their plight with Congress.
They want to see the U.S. impose and sustain sanctions against Venezuela.
Shortly before catching a flight from Miami back to Caracas on Tuesday, the students met with reporters at El Arepazo restaurant in Doral.
The students spoke about high-level talks underway between Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and key opposition leaders, like Henrique Capriles.
Capriles narrowly lost to Maduro during last year's presidential election. The two men met for several hours last week, but the visiting students told Local 10 they will not stop protesting until significant political and economic reforms take shape.
They have also met with human rights activists working with opposition groups in Cuba and tapped into the experience of Ukrainian opposition leaders.
The students said they are fearless, committed and eager to work with those fighting for democracy in other countries to learn and adapt nonviolent strategies to achieve their goal of regime change.
