Sheriff Israel says confidential informant tipped off BSO about possible robbery

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – One person was killed Thursday afternoon in a deputy-involved shooting, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened in the shopping center located at 1462 South Palm Avenue at about 3 p.m.

According to Sheriff Scott Israel, a confidential informant tipped off BSO several days ago that a robbery would happen Thursday at the Allstate located in the center.

BSO said it wanted to stop the robbery before it happened. Israel said they staged deputies inside the Allstate store Thursday afternoon, cleared out the shopping center as well as employees from the Allstate store, waiting for the robber to arrive.

At around 3 p.m., the would-be robber came into the store. Israel said he was armed, but didn't say if the suspect fired a shot.

Authorities said the masked suspect didn't comply with orders and therefore deputies fired shots.

Israel did not say how many deputies were involved in Thursday's incident, but three deputies have been placed on administrative assignment pending investigation.

Deputies said the 23-year-old Miramar man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin, authorities said.
