Man dead after explosion at gas station in Coral Gables

Police say car wash employee reported air compressor malfunction

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A man died Saturday after an explosion at a gas station in Coral Gables.

Miami-Dade police Detective Marjorie Eloi said Coral Gables police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were called just before 5:30 p.m. to a gas station explosion near Andalusia Avenue and Salzedo Street.

When they arrived, they found Henry Salzedo, 41, dead, Eloi said.

A preliminary investigation determined that the victim, a car wash employee, contacted his employer about an air compressor malfunction.

People who work in the area told Local 10 News that the blast was so loud that they initially thought that the gas station itself had blown up.

"There was just debris everyone, and from the sound of it, it was just so massive that the impact definitely killed him on the spot," Marilyn Zosia said. "We looked over and saw that the roof had caved in."

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
