DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue trucks were lined up Thursday night along a block in Century Village in Deerfield Beach after a fatal fire.
Firefighters got a call at about 5:30 p.m. about a fire in a second-floor apartment.
Officials said the heaviest flames were in a back bedroom and on the porch.
It took firefighters about 15 minutes to put out the flames. On their second search through the apartment, they found the body of one person.
"It's tragic to see a fire death anytime, you know, let alone at the beginning of the new year," BSO Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said. "This is our first fire fatality in our county."
There were a total of eight units in the wing of the building where the fire started.
The other units were not damaged, but residents had to find another place to stay for the night. Power to the building had been cut.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
