NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating a multi-vehicle crash that occurred Friday morning, leaving six people hospitalized, authorities confirmed.
According to BSO spokeswoman Miranda Grossman, the crash involving three vehicles was reported at about 7:30 a.m. in the area of Southwest 81st Avenue and Southwest Seventh Court in North Lauderdale.
“A lot of people saw the accident. It’s a super busy street,” one witness said.
Grossman said BSO deputies and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene.
“When I got out of the vehicle – I mean, I didn’t lose consciousness. I was able to climb out of the passenger door on my own,” one of the drivers, Jason Shopovick, told Local 10′s Annaliese Garcia.
Witnesses said one speeding car struck an SUV, which then lost control and slammed into a white refrigeration company truck.
“The first thing I realized was there was a bunch of kids, and I guess the car that had 90ed in front of me and lost control -- they were carrying like three or four kids and laying them on the grass, and it looked like injuries,” Shopovick said.
Grossman confirmed that medics transported six people to area hospitals.
“At least two of them got ejected from the car, so I don’t think they had car seats or seat belts,” Shopovick said. “They all seemed under 10 ... they didn’t seem alert and my prayers go out to them.”
Grossman confirmed that the victims hospitalized suffered injuries that were believed to be non-life-threatening.
She said the north and southbound lanes of Southwest 81st Avenue near Southwest Seventh Court were shut down after the crash, but have since reopened.
The driver of a Toyota involved in the crash was issued a citation, Grossman confirmed.
